Turning a Policy Into a Conversation With Parliament

Creating a policy is one thing. Getting it in front of the people who can influence change is another.
Approaching MPs can feel intimidating, particularly for individuals or families without institutional backing. But Elizabeth’s Wish has always been about bridging that gap, showing that lived experience, when paired with evidence, belongs in policy conversations.
Preparing for MP meetings required careful thought. Email are often the initial contact, and its important not to overwhel, pressure or force your point.
Rather than overwhelming MPs with detail, the focus has been on:
One clear story
A small number of powerful facts
A practical, achievable solution
Meeting Face to Face
The aim is not confrontation, but collaboration, and so far, my local MP has been more than supportive.
Elizabeth’s Wish is framed as an opportunity: a way for MPs to support safer care, patient dignity, and workforce support without demanding unrealistic change. It aligns with existing NHS priorities, patient safety agendas, and public concern.
These meetings are not about demanding immediate answers. They are about planting a seed, making dementia care in hospitals visible, human, and urgent.
Each conversation builds momentum. Each question asked by an MP signals interest. Each follow-up meeting creates space for deeper discussion.
Policy change is slow, but it always starts with conversation.
